Graded vs raw trading cards: what to check before buying
Compare graded and ungraded trading cards, verify the exact printing and choose a card that fits your collection.

Choose the printing before the grade
Start with the card you want to own. A character name alone is not enough: set code, collector number, language, edition and rarity can identify different printings. A cheaper copy from another release is not necessarily a comparable price. Use those details to narrow your search before comparing numerical grades.
What a graded card tells you
A graded card has been assessed and encapsulated by a grading company. The label records its assessment of the card and its condition. Compare cards graded by the same company where possible; grades from different companies are not a direct conversion. Check the certification number using the grader’s verification service, then compare the result with the holder and listing photos. A matching number alone does not prove that a holder is genuine.
What to check on a raw card
A raw card is not in a professional grading holder. Assess its surface, edges, corners and centring from clear front and back photographs. Ask about scratches, dents or bends that a straight-on photo may hide. Buying a raw card with the intention of grading it adds fees and uncertainty: the result is not guaranteed. Budget for the card you actually want
A higher grade may matter if you are building a collection around that standard. For a favourite illustration, you may prefer a lower grade at a price that leaves room for other cards. Consider delivery in your total and inspect the slab for scratches or cracks as well as looking at the card. Neither grading nor a high price guarantees future value.
