Magic gives the same spell many identities: original printings, showcase frames, borderless illustrations and foil treatments. Collectors may follow a favourite artist, a Commander legend or a Universes Beyond world. A graded copy preserves one specific printing; its set, collector number and language are as useful as its numerical grade.

If you have a particular card in mind, narrow your search by its set and printing before comparing grades. A favourite illustration in a grade that fits your budget may matter more to you than chasing the highest number. Look at the holder as well as the card, and use the listing’s language, rarity and certification details to keep comparisons fair. Our photographs are a useful starting point; ask if you need a clearer view of a label or corner.

Play Boosters are designed for opening and Limited play. Collector Boosters focus on collectible treatments such as special frames and foils, with contents that vary by set. Choose for the experience you want, then check the release’s product guide rather than assuming all Magic boosters have the same contents.
Official Magic product guideThey are different product formats. Older expansions can have separate Draft and Set Boosters, while Play Boosters bring opening and Limited play into one format. When buying an older sealed Magic box, use its exact format and expansion to compare like with like.
Start with the exact printing: set, card number, language and edition. Then compare the grading company, numerical grade, certificate details and photographs. Two cards with the same name can be very different collectibles. Ask for a closer photograph if the label or holder is difficult to read.
It depends on what you want to collect. A higher grade describes the grader’s assessment of condition; it does not choose the artwork, edition or price that suits you. Compare the same printing and grading company, and leave room in your budget for the cards you actually want.
Use the certification number with the grading company’s own verification service, where available. Compare the returned card details with the label and photographs. A matching number is one useful check, but it should not replace looking carefully at the card and holder.
